General overview of Xanthi Prefecture

The Prefecture of Xanthi, along with the Prefectures of Drama, Kavala, Rodopi and Evros, comprise the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which is located in the northeastern part of Greece. The capital of the Prefecture, which covers an area of 1,793 km2, is the town of Xanthi.

  • Its distance from Athens is 729 km.
  • The actual population, according to the census of 2001, is 101,856 people.

During the period 1991-2001, the population of the Prefecture increased by 11.9%. However, the majority of the population gathered in the capital of the Prefecture, and there was a decrease in the number of people living in rural, mainly mountainous areas.

It is one of the 5 or 6 most important Greek prefectures as regards its forests, since its mountains are covered by 62 ha of forest.

Its marine area, mainly around Vistonikos gulf, is excellent for fishing. It is also a rich source of minerals (marble, granite, graphite, geothermal field).

A Prefecture with great biodiversity (Nestos Delta, Nestos Straits, Mountainous Rodopi) and vibrant traditional settlements, historical monasteries, archaeological sites, and a strong cultural element.
